If you’ve met me, you might not need to be told that I love, love, love wings. My favorite are bird wings and butterfly wings, but I have bat wings and dragon wings, lace wings and wings made out of flowers and wings made out of light, faerie wings and ice wings and a lot more.
Peacock Wings (that’s me in my faerie avi)
(I look a little like a faerie showgirl, actually. Well, if it works…!)
It used to be that the best wings in Second Life by far (except for Coadey Concord’s Aurora Wings, which are available free at my store, Kate Tease) were made by Material Squirrel. And Material Squirrel still does make some of the best wings in Second Life. But I always wished that I could get wings that nice that came in different colors or were tintable, and that I could get in different sizes. Enter Jen Shikami.
Dragonfly Wings on pretty Eris Fallon in her faerie avi
I’m not going to make a comparison between Jen’s wings and Material Squirrel wings here, because both places make gorgeous, wonderfully realized wings. No, I’ve already talked about Material Squirrel wings here, so today I’m just going to gush about Jen’s wings (“Flexi Flutter Wings”), because she makes an amazing variety of inventive, beautiful, adaptable wings, and because with the help of Seven Shikami, she does magic with them. I’ll show you the wings first; then I’ll tell you about the magic. π
Ragged Fairy Wings
There are two kinds of typical wings in Second Life (not counting particle wings), those being angel/bird wings on the one hand and devil/bat/dragon wings on the other. Most of the wings you see fit one of those molds, or a variation, and Jen Shikami has some wonderful examples, like her Raven Bird Wings and her Lace Bat Wings.
Lace bat wings. π Please excuse the goth
Lolita look – I have friends who can pull that
off better than I can!
But then she goes off in all kinds of creative directions. She makes lionfish wings, Peacock wings, embroidery wings, twig wings, skeletal hand wings…well, you can see what I mean. The variety is pretty wonderful.
Lionfish Wings
Here was my wish list for wings before I got my first pair of Jen Shikami wings: more varieties, a lot more colors (to match what I’d be wearing) and more sizes (like small ones, for when you want wings but don’t want to swat your friends with them). Then Eris, wonderful Eris, bought me a present for my birthday of a pair of color-shifting Raven Bird Wings by some person I’d never heard of, someone called Jen Shikami. The wings also came with a variety of colors and special versions for tinting! And then the woman who made the wings turned out to be a lot of fun in person, and then she and Seven Shikami put out a HUD, which they improved over time, so now it has all kinds of crazy functions. You can size your wings from micro to large (see the pictures!), change their positioning, and even switch between doubles and quads…by which I mean that you can go to four wings or two whenever you like! And change flexibility, too.
Dragonfly wings at their largest size
Dragonfly wings at their smallest size
Of course, not all of these were unusual features. There have always been tintable wings, but rarely really *nice* tintable wings (although I have a pair of Material Squirrel Draconis Pixie wings that are great). There have been different sizes of wings, but a HUD that lets you change their size? And doubles and quads? Be still my fluttering heart!
This is the HUD: it lets you set things differently for
being on the ground and flying
There are things that don’t suit me as well with Jen’s wings as with some other wings. Jen’s are mostly made with partly-transparent textures, so because of that horrible and long-standing Second Life bug where the display gets confused when two transparent textures overlap, they sometimes disappear in front of windows or trellises or what have you. And they do tend to feel flat, like most Second Life wings I’ve seen, whereas there are a few wings in Second Life that feel three-dimensional because of their construction. And she tends to work with bright colors and mixes of colors and pastels, which don’t go as well with my wardrobe…but these things all have to do with the way she’s chosen to make wings, which in turn is responsible for the incredible features and the gorgeous variety, so I’ll take these small limitations happily.
Raven Bird Wings, which I tinted to match my outfit
You should know that after my first set of Jen Shikami wings, I IM’d Jen and gushed about them, and we got acquainted, and now I count her as a friend. I have gotten an incredible amount of swag from her. But the moment when this blog entry, however long it took me to write it, became a necessity, was not when I met Jen for the first time or when she gave me my first pair of freebie wings or anything like that: it was the first time I tried on a pair of her wings and thought: wow! and Finally! and Glorious!
Jen’s wings are sold at Seven’s Selections. π

Katie! This post is going to change my life!
I’ve been wanting tiny wings – I’ve been going to a lot of events lately where even my smaller wings bat people in the face or block their view.
And, just feeling kind of wing-stagnant: I wear the Fairlight molting-feather wings probably 80% of the time these days, and the Bitter Thorns cyber-wings probably 15%, with everything else either matched to a special outfit, or just rotting in inventory.
But, wow, a whole new world of variety! Yes, I’m ever more monochrome – but this might change that!
I’m headed for Jen’s shop tomorrow, and I’m going to drop *serious* Lindens!
Tell her to watch out – Soph’s coming with a wad of cash to blow! π

Awesome. I live to tempt. π Since they’re copy-OK, some people are wearing the “micro” wings on their ankles and setting them to only flap when they fly. Soo cute!
FYI, some of my wings only go down to “tiny” right now (about shoulder width). Only the version 2.3 wings are set up for “micro” size which you see on the dragonfly wings in her photo above.
I’m scurrying around to update them all between today and the end of the weekend, since I need the “micro” size for my impending micro pixie pets and avatars. π
Of course anything you buy now will still get the micro size from my update server later… but I wanted to forewarn you!

Jen –
Thanks for the tips!
I’m going to head by your store now! I’ve got my first corporate media presentation tomorrow – I’m going to be on a CMP Metaverse panel with Callie Cline, talking about avatar identity and marketing, and I’m *so* going to showcase a pair of your wings!
Do you have any recommendations for what might be striking but not overwhelming with the look in my icon?
Thanks so much!!

Sounds formal in a business type way… how about the cyber neon wings? There are versions in there that have the chrome without the glow, if you’re looking for a slicker look. Also a darker sort of gunmetal gray if you don’t want it so shiny-lookin’. (And thank you for the showcase! π

Thanks for the recommendation! I’m really torn between the chrome glow and the Scalpel in white – we’ll just see what mood strikes tomorrow!
Either way, I’m hooked up and ready!
Your wings really are as fantastic as Kate says! I’m a complete convert!

Wait – is that a peacock bikini, to match your peacock wings? Too perfect, Kate!
Glad to see Jen getting some attention – I love the wings I got from her (though I don’t wear them as often as I should). The fact that she’s such a nice person is just icing!

Why, yes it is, and thank you for noticing! π Have you ever played concentration and turned over two matching tiles completely out of the blue? Having that bikini in inventory and seeing Jen’s new peacock wings was just like that, except much more so.

I always love that outfit. π BTW, try the bikini with the new “natural” toned peacock pair I sent you a couple weeks ago. It might be an even better match than the cyan ones you have on in the photo. π

I have to add . . . I’ve been looking at the attachments that people send with their FashCon announcements (market research for when I upgrade to a designer) and I should add that your notecard was one of the more helpful and useful ones sent through there, since it had pictures AND a landmark in one happy package!

YAY wing review! Thank you Kate! And so thorough too, wow. o_o
I always consider it an excellent compliment when people compare our work favorably with Material Squirrel, as they’re notoriously famous. π At the same time I’m glad we have such different visual styles. There’s plenty of market to go around!
Just an FYI regarding my partly transparent textures: The stupid SL bug for alpha stacking affects all alpha textures in the game, not just translucent ones like I tend to use. Any time you use an alpha to cut out something, it can happen.
So technically, any wing that uses a cut-out effect is a “partly transparent texture” for the bug. π¦ That makes it just as likely to happen with my solid-looking raven wings as it is to happen with the diaphanous dragonfly wings.
Actually, part of my design decision to use semitransparent textures on (for example) butterfly wings is so when they stack against each other in profile, the bug is not as obvious.
The only wings in-game that wouldn’t have this problem have no transparency at all, built out from either square-tipped flexis or prim-based non-flexis like ovals and sculpties.
… by the way, expect some built out multi-prim feathery and steampunk mechanical wings someday soon. That’s my next big wing project after fairy work! >:) While I like the grace of flexi wings, a little structure would be nice. Siyu Suen’s inspired me on the feather front ever since I did that feather texture commission for her, but knowing me, I’ll probably make the steampunk wings first.
Regarding colors, I definitely tend toward the crazy-brights, under the theory that tinting would make up the difference. I know it can’t always, though.
Have the pastel wing packs worked out better for you? (I plan to make more of those.) Or is it more that you’re looking for natural and earthtone colors? Just curious; market survey of one. (plus anyone who might reply!)

P.S. to everybody and whoever else you want to blab to:
I have a pair of free prototype new fairy wings in the shop right now. They’re based on the ragged fairy wings. Look for the tiny logo button somewhere on the wing wall. π

I change the freebie wings out and move the button every couple weeks. These will probably come down sooner since I’ll have the retail version ready soon, though.

Sorry if I didn’t do a good job of describing the alpha transparency bug, Jen. I didn’t want to get into the frothy details of full and partial transparency and alpha transparency versus prim transparency and all that, especially since I’m nothing like an authority on it!
As for the market survey of one: I can make the most use out of earth tones and deep colors, like evergreen or indigo, but the tinting works wonderfully for that, and the only reason I use those kinds of colors is because those are the colors I wear, along with an occasional bright red and a lot of white.

I can’t help but froth about it, as I know it makes people less satisfied with my work (and that of many other texture artists…) Ah well! Thanks. π
Glad to hear it RE: tinting. In addition to the versions marked tintable, you’ll probably find interesting color combos if you try tinting the brightly-colored wings with the complementary shade. (color opposite on the color wheel.)
For example, those nice plum Ragged Fairy wings are really a bright blue tinted with a bright orange to create a deep plum. Or maybe it was the other way around?

I don’t wear wings terribly often lately (since it feels odd to mix neko ears & tail with wings…I try to be not too much of an amalgam) but those will look *darling* with my EGL outfits!

I’m such a fan of Jen’s wings that my Material Squirrel’s haven’t come out for ages now. I’ve got Butterfly, Dragonfly, Peacock, 4 folders of Ragged Fae wings, plus the new tendril Fae wings and I’m so spoiled for choice.
One of my favourite features is having them automatically change to maximum size to fly with and revert back to medium size as soon as I land.

Noice wings!! I’ll be purchasing them for my male and female toons.
I’ve been looking for good dragonfly wings for a while now. Looks like I’ve found them. One quesiton I have. I was wondering if upon landing they could fold flat across the toon’s back as well as shrinking to smaller size? Is this a choice?
Just a thought.

There *are* different positions for the wings that you can set for ground versus flight, but unfortunately they won’t rotate into a down-the-back position. Although that’s a great idea! I’ll send Jen an IM…what a great feature that would be!
