A software version or two ago, I noticed that the Second Life client had started saying it was logging IMs, which is very handy! Whenever I pop up a new conversation with someone, it shows what the last thing was that we talked about. π At a certain point I noticed that it didn’t save those conversations across computers…if I IMed someone from a different computer later on, it wouldn’t show the IM log, which demonstrated to me that the IMs were being saved on the local computer.
Yesterday I began to wonder exactly how much was actually saved of those IMs, and in what form, and went looking. I didn’t have to look long. On my Windows computer, I just had to go to the logical location, which is C:\Documents and Settings\[your Windows user name here]\Application Data\SecondLife (I’m sorry, but I have no idea at all what that might translate to in Mac-ese)…and what did I find there? Why, a folder called kate_amdahl (along with one for my worker alt and another for a friend who has used Second Life on this computer), and inside it, a plain text file for every person I’ve IMed with on that computer since the feature was implemented in early August, containing the complete text of all IMs since that time.
Did you already know about this? I didn’t really realize. It seems less than ideally private, frankly.
Some of the logs were…um, a bit steamy.
So, I just wanted to share that! Maybe you’re now saying “Oh, yay, now I can remember that thing my friend told me that I’ve been racking my brains about!” or “Oh good, I want to revisit that memory” or perhaps “Oh my god, I have to get this stuff off my computer before my visiting aunt Ruby finds it!!!” Or maybe you already knew. π In which case…why didn’t you tell me???
You can turn this off, by the way…or you can log open chat as well! Go into preferences and select the Communication button, then check or uncheck “Log Instant Messages” and “Log Chat” (you have to be logged in to be able to do that). Hope that was handy! π

I’ve always logged
People have horrible memories. I use my logs to help me remember dates i have for meetings with people, as well as things I’ve said to someone so I can write a proper article on them for my website. I’ve used SL logs for as long as I can remember as well, however I don’t use the feature of having the last bit of conversation on my IMs…it’s too much!!

Oh, thanks for that clarification…but maybe it’s only recently that they turned it on by default? The logs on the computer I’m looking at only go back to August.

I log everything on principle. That’s why I don’t use voice on principle — it’s much harder to search through logged speech later.
Then I go back to important conversations, reread them and usually, I find out something new…

I was aware of the logging function, and had been using it for some time. Reading over old chats with certain avies is a bit like reading old love letters . . .

If you are ashamed of it, it’s probably a sign you shouldn’t be doing it.

*Me laughs*
Are you talking about me? I have many emotions, but shame doesn’t really seem to rank among the top dozen. Do you mean the Aunt Ruby comment? Surely you believe there’s such a thing as privacy? And do you feel children should have easy access to erotic material? Children do come to my house sometimes.
Well, just let me know if I’m supposed to be ashamed and I’ll try to catch up!

Re: Mac chat logs
I just looked on my Mac, and I don’t even see a folder named Second Life in my Application Support. This kind of creeps me out. It definitely is logging chats in my SL, and I’d like to clear it out! Not that I’ve said anything untoward… it just… feels weird. lol
Thanks for telling us, Kate!

Re: Mac chat logs
Anon here again … hmmmm … what I described is exactly where my are, and where they went by default. Perhaps your setup is a little different. Try searching on your own hard drives for Second Life and/or your avi name(s). That should locate them, if they’re there.

Or you could do a text search for “…strokes your tail surreptitiously…”
